How Should Women's Western Jeans Fit?

Unlike fashion jeans, western jeans are designed to perform. Whether you're in the saddle, working around the farm or heading into town, your jeans should feel supportive without restricting movement.

A properly fitting pair should:

  • Sit securely around your waist without excessive gaping.
  • Feel comfortably snug through the hips and thighs.
  • Allow you to sit, bend and move freely.
  • Stack neatly over your western boots.
  • Hold their shape while becoming more comfortable with wear.
  • Stretch denim and high-cotton denim will generally relax over time, so avoid choosing jeans that already feel loose when new.

Brand Comparison

Ariat Women's Jeans

Uses traditional waist sizing (23–34).

Generally true to size.

Stretch denim offers excellent recovery and retains its shape well.

If you're between sizes in a stretch style, we usually recommend choosing the smaller size.

Perfect for riding, work and everyday wear.

Cinch Women's Jeans

Uses traditional waist sizing (23–34).

Generally true to size.

Classic western fit with moderate stretch.

Holds its shape well while becoming more comfortable with wear.

If you're between sizes in a stretch style, the smaller size is often the better option.

Wrangler Women's Jeans

Uses 00, 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 sizing.

Generally true to size.

Different collections can vary slightly, so always check the individual product description.

Comfortable from the first wear with a slight amount of relaxation over time.

Available in a variety of rises and leg shapes to suit riding, work and casual wear.

Kimes Ranch Women's Jeans

Uses 000, 00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 sizing.

Different collections and denim compositions can fit slightly differently, so always check the individual product description for style-specific sizing advice.

Many Kimes Ranch jeans are made with a high percentage of cotton, allowing the denim to soften, relax and mould to your body with wear. For these styles, we generally recommend sizing down for the best long-term fit.

At Billy Goats Country Outfitters, we follow the philosophy: "If it zips, it fits." If the jeans zip comfortably and you can sit, bend and move without pain or excessive restriction, they're usually the correct size and will become even more comfortable after a few wears.

Many Kimes Ranch styles feature an extra 2-inch hem, designed to be flipped up when worn off the horse. This provides the extra length needed while riding but allows the hem to be turned up for everyday wear. If you don't intend to ride in your jeans, you may prefer ordering a shorter inseam than you would for riding.

7 For All Mankind Women's Jeans

Uses traditional waist sizing (23–34).

Generally true to size with premium stretch denim.

The fabric is softer than most western brands and offers excellent flexibility.

Many styles will relax slightly with wear.

If you're between sizes, we usually recommend the smaller size.

Choosing the Right Jean Length

Choosing the correct inseam is just as important as selecting the right waist size.

Riding

For riding, western jeans should be worn longer than fashion jeans. The extra length allows the jeans to continue covering the top of your boots while you're seated in the saddle.

When standing, riding jeans should "stack" over your boots. This is completely normal and is how western jeans are designed to fit.

Everyday Wear

If you don't intend to ride, many customers prefer a shorter inseam for a cleaner look with less stacking over their boots.

Height Guide

Height Suggested Starting Length*
Under 160cm Short
160–170cm Regular
170–178cm Long
Over 178cm Extra Long

*Height is only a guide. Your leg length, footwear and intended use will determine the best inseam.

Boot Cut, Trouser & Flare

Boot Cut

The classic western jean.

Slim through the thigh with a slight flare below the knee to comfortably fit over western boots.

Trouser

A wider leg opening designed for a dressier look while still fitting over boots.

Flare

Features a wider leg opening than a traditional boot cut for a modern western style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should western jeans feel tight when new?

Yes. Most western jeans should feel comfortably firm when first tried on. Stretch denim and high-cotton denim will soften and mould to your body after several wears.

Should I size down in Kimes Ranch?

For many Kimes Ranch styles, yes.

Because of the high cotton content, the denim relaxes with wear. We generally recommend sizing down and follow the philosophy:

"If it zips, it fits."

Do Ariat and Cinch fit the same?

Generally, yes.

Both brands use traditional waist sizing and fit similarly, although individual styles and denim compositions can vary.

Are Wrangler jeans true to size?

Generally yes, although Wrangler uses an odd-number sizing system instead of waist sizing.

Always check the product description, as different collections may fit slightly differently.

Why are my riding jeans so long?

Western riding jeans are intentionally longer than casual jeans.

When you're sitting in the saddle, the jeans pull upwards. The extra length ensures they continue covering your boots while riding.
